Community Leaders Award

At the beginning of 2010, yLead launched a new initiative for students in South-East Queensland. Our belief is that ‘leadership is any action that makes the world I touch a better place’ and that it is accessible to anyone, irrelevant of badge or title. Leadership is a choice! It is this core philosophy that led to the development of the Community Leaders Awards.

We wholeheartedly believe that real leadership is accompanied by action, and that we should be both encouraging and celebrating the wealth of initiatives taking place in Australian schools. The Awards are an opportunity to recognise and reward projects that demonstrate this philosophy in their communities, be it on a school, local or global scale.

ASLC project group meetingIn 2010, the Awards were a pilot program, open to schools that had students attend an Australian Student Leadership Conference at the beginning of the year. Following the conference, students were issued with the challenge of creating a project that would leave a legacy from their final year of schooling, and give them the opportunity to continue developing their leadership skills. The judging criteria required that the projects take a ‘whole school’ approach and engage students across the year levels, as well as demonstrating a workable leadership structure and a clear approach that outlined their vision for change in their community. The projects from the fourteen schools who entered are testament to the hard work and dedication of an inspired group of young leaders, and we applaud them all.

In 2012, ALL SCHOOLS IN AUSTRALIA are now eligible to enter! Keep reading to find out how your school can be a part of it...
