Empowering girls across Australasia

By January 15, 2015Event, Schools

yLead kicked off the year with another first, facilitating an amIMG_5229azing Student Leadership Conference just for girls. Held annually by The Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia, 153 female student leaders from across Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines and USA gathered at Bond University on the Gold Coast for ‘SLC’.

The five-day conference was themed EMPOWER with a focus on developing brave, bold women who will each leave their own unique mark on the world. The days were filled with a variety range of workshops that focused on developing the leader within as well as learning how to lead a team and take action within their school.

The girls heard from a host of brilliant and wise speakers throughouIMG_4902t the week including Robyn Moore – the voice of Blinky Bill, Dan Flynn – Co-Founder of Thankyou Co, Fiona de Jong – the Australian Olympic Committee Secretary General and US philanthropist Francine LeFrak.

A highlight of the conference for all that participated was an afternoon spent at Main Beach. The girls were set a secret challenge to spell out a series of words and phrases on the sand using only their bodies. Whilst the weather was not favourable that afternoon (it poured down rain!), the girls CFDA Fashion Awards Red Carpet Dressesstepped up to the challenge and had a fabulous afternoon bonding in the wet sand. To cap it off a helicopter flew above to capture some photos of their success!

We were extremely impressed by the girls approach to the conference – their can-do attitude and drive to make their mark on the world was obvious. We have no doubt they will take the experiences and lessons learnt from this conference back into their schools and communities to make a real difference.
