Fred Masoe
Queensland
Fred Masoe is a young community leader who truly epitomises ‘Aint No Mountain High Enough'.
A student of Mabel Park SHS on Brisbane's working class South-side, Fred saw the progressive deterioration in the attitudes of the senior students of his school and decided when he was senior, things would change. To do so, he would have to shift the attitude of entire school community but he was not going to let that stop him! Fred Masoe was determined to leave a legacy in 2008!
Fred, with the support of a close group of friends, spear-headed te effort to raise the community profile of the school, the students self-respect and to re-empower students on the edge.
In 2008, Fred's final year, his efforts showed multiple results:
• An increase in students wearing the formal uniform with pride
• The first rugby camp in 7 years that the students themselves worked hard to raise the funds for. Fred, with the assistance of staff also taught leadership to the boys empowering them to leave a positive leagacy at the school and to do this through taking action daily.
• The re-emergence of ‘Drumline', a student led marching band. The concept behind Drumline was to empower students on the edge to re-connect with the school and their own self-identity, finding pride and purpose in what they do every day. Drumline appeared at multiple youth events around Brisbane including Creative Generations and on ‘Toasted TV' and continues in 2009.
Young, funky, engaging and real, Fred Masoe will inspire your students to want to leave a positive legacy in the world around them by seeking the small opportunities that present themselves everyday.
